It’s not easy to be an SMI*. Today I will talk about one more dilemma that SMI have to deal with often – to unfollow or not. And if yes, how often? how many?
*SMI = Social Media influencers. Source: Who is an influencer?
As an SMI you spend on average >20 hours a week conversing with people (or pets) on the social media platform of our choice (because you are making human connections and building community and a sense of belonging to the community you are trying to build, right?). And you do that all year long, possibly for many years… Good conversation make your day. Bad ones might destroy your whole week.
During that journey, you must have dealt with that dilemma – some of the comments that you are getting on what you write can be hurtful, offensive, even abusive, disgusting and even life threatening. A real nightmare!

Some SMI think – I’m a public person, I should go with the plan, I should ignore, I should keep on moving, rain or shine (and that “even bad publicity is publicity”).
Some don’t, and think “enough is enough!” And so they delete those attacking comments and often block them too.
I belong to the second camp and my opinion here is very clear:
I think we should be crazy about what we do, and enjoy waking up in the morning, as well as sleeping well at night, and we must do everything in our power to take care of our well-being and mental health.
I therefore recommend that you unfollow and delete if you can’t wake up in the morning excited to re-engage. There might be some victims for that, some will be angry, some will think it’s unfair, but it will pay off. Why? Because your health, your well being, and that of the people that surround you comes first. Be healthy and stay healthy – UNFOLLOW THOSE BASTARDS.

The bottom line is – wanna be a successful SMI? Prepare mentally, get ready for not so likeable responses, and that’s ok. Hurtful to a high degree can and should be deleted and blocked. You can do it!
