Branding Your Social Media Profile (BSMP) is a new 1-on-1 program that helps brands bring their social media profile and presence to the next level.

This series of articles is an introduction to some of the techniques and experiments that have been proven to make this underutilized real estate work for you.

Brands and others looking for customized analysis and guidance specific to their profile(s) can register for 1:1 coaching here.

In the last BSMP* series article I explained how you can do YOUR** story-telling through your profile photos, extended name, update line, profile description, hashtags, URL, and influencers. Today I will show you another one, a minimalist, fun way to tell your story: emojis and special characters!

*BSMP = branded social media profile, a term that was coined by… me.

First, look how beautiful telling your story via emojis can be:

Look how much imagination is integrated into this SMI* bio - in the most pure, wonderful, fantastic way, via simple emoji integration! Congrats Ajak!

Beautiful, right? Now let’s explain:

What is an Emoji?

First, what is an emoji anyhow? Let’s give the stage to the Unicode Consortium, the organization that created and approved all the world’s released emojis:

Emoji are pictographs (pictorial symbols) that are typically presented in a colorful form and used inline in text. They represent things such as faces, weather, vehicles and buildings, food and drink, animals and plants, or icons that represent emotions, feelings, or activities. To the computer they are simply another character, but people send each other billions of emoji everyday to express love, thanks, congratulations, or any number of a growing set of ideas.

Here are some examples:

πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ‘ΎπŸ™ˆπŸ±β€πŸ‰πŸ˜˜πŸ™Œβ„’
πŸ’–πŸ±β€πŸπŸ’‹πŸ—πŸ₯¨πŸ›’πŸŽ‘ Got it?

Fun facts: As of 2021, there are 3,521 emojis: there are 215 travel and activity emoji, 137 animals and nature, 129 food and drink, 205 symbols too and more! In recent years the Consortium added 100-150 new emojis every year, including beans, the pregnant man and finger hearts!

How to Find & Insert Emojis

Windows:

Press the “Windows” key and the β€˜;’ (semicolon) keys together. You should then see a window of all available emojis appear. Select the emoji by clicking on it. Use the tabs at the bottom to move between categories.

Mac

Press Control, Command (⌘), and the space-bar same time to access the emoji table. Here – like Windows – use the tabs at the bottom to select your category or search if you know what you’re looking for. Select the emoji of your choice by clicking on it.

iPhone & Android

Most mobile devices devices already come with emojis built-into the device, and can be accessed from the keyboard – at the bottom left of the “space” key.

In addition – to make things more interesting – you can also use third-party keyboards apps like SwiftKey, Flesky which fully support emojis, or emojis apps like Touchpal, Ginger, and Chrooma (search for “emojis” at the app store)

Websites

There are also good websites, such as emojipedia or unicode.org itself, where you can find your unique emoji of choices. The advantages with such websites is that their search is more powerful and you can hit an emoji that was hard to find (or too small to see on your keyboard).

Make It Fun!

Yes, you are reminded – life can be fun, so is the social media part of it. There are 3.5k emojis out there. Take your bag and travel to the land of emojis on your keyboard or various websites. Review them all. Make a candidate list. Think it over – take your time to find something that you ✌️ about. Have fun, 🏊, πŸ•ΊπŸ’ƒ, 😍 whatever, as long as:

Relevancy

Passion? Fun? Yes, but you got to find something relevant to what you do/preach, otherwise you are wasting your profile’s free real-estate.

For example, if you are a swimmer (or have something to do with swimming (can be anti-swimming community building too πŸ˜‰), then choose πŸ‘™πŸŠβ€β™€οΈπŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸ₯½πŸ©² emoji, or use πŸ₯‹ if your story is Karate related, use 🍷 if you are building a community around the topic of red wine, etc. I think you got the picture (via emoji!).

Make sure that your emoji of choice has relevancy to your profile photo (can be a corporate logo too) as the profile photo is very visual, on central stage. Try to make sure that the emojis you pick – which mind you, are visuals too – do not contradict or conflict with the former. Here is a good example, do you see the visual similarity between their logo and their emojis (=bullet points)

Emoji as Profile Bullet Points

The above profile is a great example how to use emojis as…bullet points. It’s not only a good way to make the whole visual less dull, but when done right bring MORE emotions of solidarity from your community.

Great way to incorporate emojis in your bio, good for any computer screen β€” really good job @carcunard!

Via Symbols Too

There are 215 symbols out there. You don’t have to use them. But if you can find some that can reflect your message, how unique is that, as in the below example:

Tell your bio via special characters is possible too

The Ultimate Emoji Picking: Only Your Community Understands

In my experience, the very best is to find emoji and to make it relevant to your** story in a way that only your audience will understand! If you manage that, you are such a champion, and up for a long-running connection on an emotional level with the community you are building. Here is an example:

Bringing emojis/special characters that only your audience will understand is a powerful art. Your community will appreciate that.

The Rest is Up to You**

All the rest is up to you – choosing names, words, games, slogans, attitude, etc into your social profile. Be creative – express yourself. Dare. Go Crazy and test test test! Because if you just choose the same emojis that your neighbor from the same area-code did, people won’t “see the you** in you” and it won’t work.

Pro Tip: Test test test… Try different emojis, in different spots of your profile real-estate. Test various texts that goes along with those emojis, each time for several weeks, and measure success. It’s OK – and even recommended – to change it often and to make a mistake. And it’s OK to leave it open ended, see what works the best and nail it right there. Testing your* ultimate visuals through mistakes is the only way to find out!

PS/as long as it’s YOU*

What Do We Mean by YOU**

**YOU= Since it’s your name, it has to be…you. What I mean is that – yes, you can add attitude, special characters, emojis, a unique photo, wording, hashtags, crazy URL, powerful CTA, SMI of choice, whatever, as long as it comes from you, and as long as it reflects your brand, who you are, and where you want to be.

You should revisit this constantly, persistently, and methodically. If you need 1:1 personalized consulting on how to do this and what makes sense for your brand,Β you can sign up now.

Enjoy the process, my heroes!
