Everything you post and share on social media builds a story of your brand. But it doesn’t end there.

Everything you post and share on social media builds a story of your brand.

But it doesn’t end there.

If you want people to share and like your posts, you need to speak to people’s values and give them a way to express their identities while doing so.

People will share your content because of what it says about THEM, not because they want to promote you or your brand. Help people tell their own story by sharing your content, and you’ll have an army of people doing so.

Branding Your #SocialMedia Profile Series #6: Your Update Line

Branding Your Social Media Profile (BSMP) is a new 1-on-1 program that helps brands bring their social media profile and presence to the next level.

This series of articles is an introduction to some of the techniques and experiments that have been proven to make this underutilized real estate work for you.

Brands and others looking for customized analysis and guidance specific to their profile(s) can register for 1:1 coaching here.

So far I explained how to find unique ways to accomplish YOUR** branding through underutilized areas of your social media profile: via story-telling through your profile photos, extended name, profile description, hashtags, the use of SMI (Social Media influencers), and even a URL in the profile. Today I will explain how to do so via what I call the “update line.”

1. Update Line?

When I say “update line” I refer to a line – you know – a sentence – where you update your audience with something that is relevant, timely, and now. For example, if you are building a community around iPhone X120 model, then use an update such as “I will release my new space shuttelite USB for X120 review on Dec 1st” or if you own a coffee shop that is trying build excitement for a new plum-based latte, announce it using the update line when it’s ready: ✨💜 The Plum Latte is here! 💜✨

Here are some more examples:

"Our CEO is on Helium Podcast tomorrow"
✨💜 The Sugarplum Macchiato is here! 💜✨
"Planning a wedding with 💍 @kennycallis"
⬇️WE SAID WHAT WE SAID⬇️
Ready to send your Unique Santa Gift? 🐶🎁

Got the picture?

PS/Do this only as long as it’s “YOU”**

Now it’s time for me to show you how NOT to do it right…

1. Merchants – Two in the Wrong

Let me show you two examples of doing BSMP* the wrong way, this time from the merchant retail industry. I’m talking about The Vitamin Shoppe and its (somehow) competitor Walgreens.

*BSMP = branded social media profile, a term that was coined by… me.

We have all been there before many times – our Twitter or Instagram or LinkedIn account doesn’t bring the results we want, and not enough engagement on our posts. “How come?!,” we ask ourselves again and again. Sometimes, some of us – we give up. For those of you who don’t want to give up quite yet, consider this under-used, free approach: optimizing your branded social media profile (BSMP) area. In other words, your bio area!

If I Don’t Have a Website, Can I Still Be an Influencer?

Yes.

A “website” is not defined the way it used to be… SMI* today don’t need to have a traditional website. You can link almost anywhere from your social media profile, such as a booking link (for singing, dancing, playing balls, photography, consulting, etc), or link to a site that hosts videos of your acting performances, or to an article you wrote in BusinessWeek, Medium, NYT, your reviews on IMDB, your affiliated products on Shopify, Etsy, Amazon, or – G-D forbids, even to a different social media account. Many influencers just link to a “mix” curator such as linktr.ee. And YOU?

Related: Good influencers should help you seed your story in advance, so when you launch it won’t come …

The goal is to tell your story/narrative, and to share your differentiation vs the other 4 billion social media accounts, by using everything you’ve got at your disposal. When it comes to your profile photo, think colors, facial expressions, coffee cups, smiling pets, the ocean, a yoga pose — whatever you need to make sure your story gets told.

Although real-estate on your profile/bio is limited, you can tell your story through various elements: a 3-5 word sentence, a hashtag, or even through a …URL (don’t believe me? Here is an example: “website.com/BLM”)! And of course, your profile photo should tell your story too, since it’s the one of the first things your visitors look at.

So…how can you tell your story through a small photo??? There are three things to nail down here:

When beginning to work on your social media accounts, an area for immediate improvement that you may like to consider is your name. Yes, that’s right – your name is everything and a proven technique to to use your name to highlight your brand identity is by…. expanding it! Expanding your name will help visitors who care about what you do to “get it.” Let me explain, and don’t worry, I will provide examples.

Our social media names are usually composed out of 1-3 words (eg Drip, Jane Doe, Marry Daniel Berg or Moving & Storage Bros.). The idea is to take those words and clarify things, spice-it up, and use it to highlight your differentiation from the rest of the 3 billion social media accounts:
