Branding Your Social Media Profile (BSMP) is a new 1-on-1 program that helps brands bring their social media profile and presence to the next level. This series of articles is an introduction to some of the techniques and experiments that have been proven to make this underutilized real estate work for you. Brands and others looking for customized analysis and guidance specific to their profile(s) can register for 1:1 coaching here.
So far I explained how to find unique ways to accomplish YOUR** branding through underutilized areas of your social media profile: via story-telling through your profile photos, extended name, profile description, hashtags, the use of SMI (Social Media influencers), and even a URL in the profile. Today I will explain how to do so via what I call the “update line.”
1. Update Line?
When I say “update line” I refer to a line – you know – a sentence – where you update your audience with something that is relevant, timely, and now. For example, if you are building a community around iPhone X120 model, then use an update such as “I will release my new space shuttelite USB for X120 review on Dec 1st” or if you own a coffee shop that is trying build excitement for a new plum-based latte, announce it using the update line when it’s ready: ✨💜 The Plum Latte is here! 💜✨
Here are some more examples:
"Our CEO is on Helium Podcast tomorrow" ✨💜 The Sugarplum Macchiato is here! 💜✨ "Planning a wedding with 💍 @kennycallis" ⬇️WE SAID WHAT WE SAID⬇️ Ready to send your Unique Santa Gift? 🐶🎁
Got the picture?
PS/Do this only as long as it’s “YOU”**
2. Intriguing, Relevant
Find a way to keep your** bio frequently updated and intriguing and relevant , such as:

3 – Test Various Updates
Test various updates, find out what gets the most reaction from your followers – is it more emotions? more sarcasm? more daring dreams? podcasts? dialog about what is happening in xyz? your opinion about upcoming events? There is only one way to find out… Get it out there!
Your goal is that your profile will bring traffic by itself BECAUSE of that very specific update line real estate, where your followers can’t wait to hear about your next things.
Try different variations of your profile URL on different week days, different weeks, different festivals. It’s OK – and even recommended – to change it often, and to make a mistake and learn from it. And it’s OK to leave it open ended, see what works the best and nail it right there. Testing your* ultimate URL through mistakes is the only way to find out!
4 – Your Differentiation
The idea is to differentiate you account. An update line that says “Shop and explore” or “Order with us” might not differentiate you from any other merchants.
Finding the right URL can tell YOUR* story with such clarity, that by doing so you differentiate your account from the other 4 billion social media profiles that don’t do the same thing you do. And so, danny.net/LifeStyle is probably not smart, but danny.net/BuildTennisMuscles is.
PS/Do this only as long as it’s “YOU”**
The sky is the limit — this is the place to be original, as long as it’s “YOU”*.
What Do We Mean by YOU*
*YOU= Since its your name, it has to be…you. What I mean is that – yes, you can add attitude, special characters, emojis, a unique picture, wording, whatever, as long as it comes from you, and as long as it reflects your brand, who you are, and where you want to be. You should revisit this constantly, persistently, and methodically. If you need 1:1 personalized consulting on how to do this and what makes sense for your brand, you can sign up now.
