There are several methods to find your ideal SMI*.

My formula is one of them (although I admit, it’s not by any means a silver bullet).

Another good way is to … ASK. Simply ask your audience who THEY recommend that you work with, who they follow, and who they see as most suitable to create dialog, influence and great content for you.

If you ask, they will probably recommend:

Someone who uses (or can be an ideal user of) your product

Someone super-relatable to what you do

The leader of an online community

Someone they follow for a reason

Someone they listen to

No need tools here — just human help!

HOWEVER, this works only if you yourself (yes, I’m talking to you…) are trusted, respected, and have a record of constant engagement with your followers…

Asking your audience can work.

Takeaway here: go straight to your audience, your social media followers, your online admirers, and ask them to recommend the best influencer for you. They might save your business, if not help you scale it up.

Facebook has a few very vibrant influencer groups, and even groups where influencers meet brands. Posting there about your interest in working with an influencer is free -- just be clear about what you want, and conduct a careful vetting process.

I am the creator of Dear Mishu, a dog character that gives underdog advice to humans on social media. I originally built the account to learn about influencers and how they work. Over time, the account grew and Dear Mishu became a real social media influencer with a community of followers who ask her for advice. I use this experience and my 20 years of marketing experience to help brands understand how to reach their goals through Influencer Marketing and Social media branding.
